What happens when a landscape changes — and how can art tell that story? Students investigate Ontario’s Ring of Fire and James Bay Lowlands while creating a cumulative before-and-after landscape showing the relationship between environment, natural resources, human activity and change. Through Canadian artworks, maps, media and mixed-media techniques, students explore the landscape as it exists today and imagine how roads, mining and development can transform land, water and communities. Available in Grade 3 and Grade 5 versions as a 4-session project, 90 minutes per lesson. Curriculum connections include Visual Arts with Grade 3 Social Studies B2.1–B2.6 and Grade 5 Science C1.1, C1.2, D1.1, D1.2, exploring space, colour, texture, value, proportion, environmental impacts, natural resources, evidence, perspective and visual communication.
