Step into the bold, playful world of Henri Matisse! Students explore expressive line, colour, shape and space through movement, drawing, gouache painting and Matisse’s famous “drawing with scissors” technique, gradually building a collection of cut-paper elements for a final collage. Along the way, they experiment with colour contrast, positive and negative space, organic and geometric forms, symmetry, layering and composition before arranging everything into a bright finished artwork and mini class exhibit. Designed for Grades 3–4 as a 4-session project, 80 minutes per lesson. Curriculum connections: Visual Arts D1.1, D1.4, D2.2, D3.2 — line, colour, texture, shape, space, foreground/middle ground/background, contrast, repetition, variety, emphasis, composition and artistic traditions.
