Forget the starving artist myth - real careers in music are out there, (and they pay pretty nicely!)
It’s easy to be misled into the belief that a career in music means constant struggle and uncertainty. But the reality is, the music industry is evolving and it’s full of impactful and rewarding positions that need creative people. From scoring films, to teaching music, to running social media accounts and running live sound at concerts, there’s a career in music for everyone!
Behind the scenes heroes
The biggest names in music wouldn’t get far without the people working behind the scenes. Think about the producers who shape the sound of an album, the sound engineers who make live shows crisp and flawless, or the managers who map out worldwide tours. These roles don’t require fame, just passion, technical skill and a love for music.
Interested in technology?
Music and tech go together like peanut butter and jelly, a perfect pair. In the 21st century knowing the tech behind the music is a golden ticket to a long-lasting career. Jobs like audio software developers, sound design for video games and music data analysis for companies like Spotify and Apple Music, are quickly growing in demand. If you’re a tech-savvy problem solver with a creative flair, a career in music technology could be for you.
Music meets business
The music industry is also big business and it needs marketing specialists, social media managers and publicists to thrive. These are the people who help artists build their brand, launch their albums and grow audiences. If you have strong communication skills and love creative strategy, a role in music marketing could be a perfect fit.
Passionate about education? Think music teaching!
Music teachers are the foundation of almost every musician’s journey. They do far more than just teach scales or correct technique, they nurture creativity, inspire and help build confidence in young students. Worried about feeling stuck in one career? The good news is that a career teaching in music is incredibly diverse, from teaching at private music schools, to working in elementary and high schools as a full-time educator, music teachers shape the future of music with their passion and knowledge.
How do you get started?
The first step towards your new career in music is figuring out which side of the industry excites you the most. Performance, tech, business, marketing or teaching. From there consider going to school or taking specialized courses to help you make connections and find a career path you’d love
Building your portfolio is another important step towards a career in music, it doesn't have to be fancy, home-recordings and basic social media content can make a huge difference when you're just starting out. The music industry is bigger, more diverse and more exciting than most people realize.
